Supernatural Season Finale
Supernatural “All Hell Breaks Loose”
The Winchester boys had one hell of a sophomore finale. One died, the other sold his soul to the devil to resurrect the other, their dead Father crawled from the depths of hell to wrassle with the Yellow Eyed Demon, Sam may or may not have come back from the dead a little different (hey it happened to Buffy) because he was more than willing to pop a cap in another human’s ass (granted that bitch - Dean’s words not mine - deserved it), the Roadhouse burned to the ground killing a bunch of hunters and our beloved and mulleted Ash, and finally Dean was able to kill YED with the famous COLT, putting an end to that chapter of their lives of torment. YED killed their Mother and Jessica and forced these two into the lives they lead now and it was incredible to see Dean waste this demon.
Oh, did I mention that they opened the gates of hell for a few minutes which released a couple hundred evil spirits back onto Earth?
Yeah, I guess this is where we’ll be going for Season 3. Well, there and on Sam’s quest to get Dean out of his one year life contract with the Devil. Should be a season of fun, sun, and puppies…
Speaking of puppy…dog eyes… could Jensen have been better in his crying scenes? He was really impressive, as we’ve not really had many moments where Dean’s lost it over the last two seasons. I love his dedication to his brother and his promise to always protect Sammy, even if it means giving back the borrowed time he’s already living on. He’s the real deal. He’s not afraid to sacrifice his life for his family. His Father made a deal with the devil to save Dean and in return he did the same for Sam. Hi, who’s winning the unselfish Brother of the Year Award?
I’d pretty much let any member of my family eat it before I sacrificed myself. Spread the word!
Here’s a moment of brain lapse for ya, it took until about halfway through the finale before I realized that YED is also the Marshall that was after Kate on LOST. Hello! It took me watching LOST:The Answers the other night to bring that refresher to the forefront.
Overall I really enjoyed the two part finale. There were some truly Children of the Corn like moments in Part 1 when the special kids were chillin’ in Deadwood. That one chick hanging from the windmill will forever be burned into my brain as a really incredible iconic horror image and I thank Kripke and Co. for that! Amazing visual. I was sad to see each of the special kids (why do I feel like writing about a short yellow bus when I type that?) turn agains the others.
The loveable Stoner bit it pretty early which saddened me because he was pretty damn funny. Ava turned into a raving psychopath huh? I was so mad until I realized that she’s been there for 5 months killing all the short busers that have come through! E-to the-VIL. Jake (Voodoo from Friday Night Lights) was a total douche. Noone stabs my JPad in the back and lives to tell about it. Well, he didn’t (damn Sam, one to the head usually does the trick).
I think I would have liked to have known more of the special kids and seen more of a Slayer type Army created to fight against evil but maybe that’s for another day. I’m just projecting my wants and needs onto a show that so doesn’t need my input. It has a very clear vision of where is came from and where it’s going. And I think we can all agree that its a scary and dark yet amazing place.
It was great to see Bobby in a bigger role. I loved when Sam showed up at his door. The look of terror and sadness in his face was amazing. Love love loved Bobby ripping Dean a new one (wanting to throttle him) for selling his soul. It was such raw anger and contempt for the Winchesters and their need to self destruct.
I enjoyed seeing Ellen again. I’m sure you all caught on from my Set Visit Report that she was going to be in the finale because she was on set that day (eating tons and filming DVD extras).
It was great to see the scene we saw the boys rehearsing and shooting. It was just after Sam is revived and they eat. Both are chowing on Pizza and talking about the Roadhouse burning down and Ash (and possibly Ellen) dying. It’s a somber scene but damn if those boys didn’t make it insanely funny during rehearsals. I already wrote all about it, so I won’t rehash it other than to say it was great to see the final product.
It was great to see the boys wearing what we saw them in when we met them.

There were tons of things I reported on but there were also a few that I didn’t mention. One of the things we were sworn to secrecy about was the fact that Jeffrey Dean Morgan would be reprising his role as John Winchester for the finale. Granted everyone knew he was coming back but did you know that he didn’t even make it to the set in Vancouver? He was tied up in LA so he had to film all of his scenes via Green Screen. Now, I know you could tell it was all CGI but in general I feel that the scene worked. So much sadness in seeing Papa Winchester above ground again… I was just happy to see him.
Now let me tell you how I found out he would be in the finale, how I found out that the Roadhouse burned down, that Ash was dead, and that Ellen surivives? Yeah, there was a makeup call sheet on the mirror in the makeup trailer that listed all the shots and WHAMMO, without even a warning, I read all those things above. It was shocking but in no way interferred with how I felt about the finale.
Rae was a good girl and remained as spoiler free as possible. She didn’t read that sheet and that my friends is will power!
What did everyone else think of the finale? I feel that Supernatural really hit its stride this season and found that perfect balance of horror, action, comedy, and drama. It really is the new Buffy and that my friends is the highest compliment I can pay.
Until next fall…

Supernatural has to work really hard for me to dislike an episode (hello Route 666 and Roadkill) and the finale lived up to all my expectations of Kripke and the boys. You pretty much said it all above…Jensen was at the top of his game (allow me to be shallow here and say that the fact that Jensen and Jared shed real tears makes me swoon ever more!), Sam totally channeled possessed Sam and killed Jake, Bobby is terrified of losing Dean and Sam since he’s already lost John, his best friend, Ellen can actually be really vulnerable, and I’m a little sad they killed the YED just because the actor who played him is seriously kick-ass. They did a really great job of letting Dean and Sam come to some kind of resolution with their quest (with John and the YED) but also giving them a new mission that the audience can feel invested in.
I think it’s really interesting how many of the new shows this Fall are supernaturally oriented. I’m sure this has more to do with Heroes than say Smallville and Supernatural, but I like the trend and hope it sticks around for a while.

Wait, Emily are you saying that you didn’t like Route 666 and/or Roadkill? Route was not great but I really really liked Roadkill (and not just because of Tricia Helfer).
It is a little sad that YED is gone but I agree that it was wonderful to actually get closure without changing the direction of the show. Next season will continue with the same general feel and tone and purpose. Plus, now more than ever they have a mission to complete. SAVE DEAN WINCHESTER!

I pretty much hate Route 666…and it has nothing to do with Dean’s relationship with Cassie, though it was the actress I had a problem with. I think, quite often, the show’s weaknesses are the girl-of-the-week actors, I know there have to be better female actors in Canada than what they’re able to come up with sometimes. I know this girl has been on 4400 and many other shows (VM included), but her painfully forced acting and reactions to the town’s history of race problems were terribly distracting. And the killer truck? That should have been the monster-of-the-week in a comedic episode. It didn’t fit with the intensity of the rest of the plot.
Roadkill I didn’t so much hate, it was just one of the weaker episodes. It has nothing to do with Tricia Helfer, she was a welcome exception to my girl-of-the-week complaint. I didn’t see the end coming and was pleasantly surprised by the plot twist. But it just couldn’t make up for the other 40 minutes of Sam sitting around and talking incessantly and Dean jumping in every once in a while for comedic relief. The overdone stereotypes of their characters throughout the episode really bothered me.
Well, here is pretty much the extent of my complaints about Supernatural…they are few but felt strongly. Otherwise, you know my lusty, drooling love for Dean and Sam and everything else Supernatural.

I watched both episodes back-to-back last night. AMAZING!
Jensen hit one out of the ball park - this kid can act. (Which makes me heart him even more)
This was the perfect denouement. There is nothing more frustrating than a show that drags storylines out forever (hello, Lost and Heroes - I’m talking to you). We have some resolution and new problems to conquer. No sophmore slump for our Winchester boys - in fact, it was a stellar season all around.
Thank you Ducky, for all things Supernatural on your site this season.
Next up - SAVE DEAN WINCHESTER!!!
