Supernatural Set Visit 2007
I barely know where to begin talking about my weekend in Vancouver and my visit to the set of The CW’s kickass show SUPERNATURAL.
I know I need to send a huge thanks and shout out to Holly and Winson at Warner Bros. for once again hooking a brother up! Veronica Mars was an incredible experience last year and I’m so fortunate to have been invited back for another Blogger day, this time with my boys, Jensen and Jared.
To get the obvious fan stuff out of the way first, I will state for the record that JPad is a large man. He is a beautiful man, we all know this. He stands like 6′ 4″ and has shoulders as wide as I am tall. Who knew? Jensen has always been considered the small one but ladies and gents, he’s gotta be 6′ 1″ and that my friends, is nothing to shake a stick at (or throw out of bed).
What I need to confess though is that for all the time I’ve been a Jared fan, I’ve been missing out… I may have crossed over to the other side. The other Winchester.
I’m switching brothers… maybe. Jensen when he holds your hand and gazes into your eyes is WOW folks… WOW! It’s swoon worthy dream boat time. Birds chirped, our eyes met, and a record scratched when he diverted his attention to Rae standing next to me and said her name twice.
I’ve got a shovel and a .45 Rae, I doubt you’ll be missed!
Alright, now that I’ve just lost all credibility, I threatened to kill a friend, and lost any chance at convincing someone I might be straight so what the hell…
THE BOYS ARE HOT. You know it, I know it and they have to know it.
Now, can I move on?
Geeze, all this gushing…
I arrived in Vancouver on Thursday morning around 11am. When I made it through Customs (which seriously was the most lax customs ever because they didn’t ask anything, didn’t stamp anything, and didn’t even look at my passport) I went to the meeting point. I will first and foremost confess that I know nothing about Vancouver or its heritage. The city is big on its Native heritage and is full of history and art that reflects its culture. Beautiful sights and sculptures everywhere.
The first person I meet is Marjorie from TV with meevee - it was great to finally meet her as I’m a loyal meevee fan and member. Daniel from TheTVAddict was next . He sat down next to me for like 5 minutes, got up and left. I thought it had to be him but honestly, I’ve only seen pics of him with his dog. Unless that dog was sitting next to him, he could have been anyone from anywhere. Minutes later he comes back and asks if I’m who I am. It was funny. Soon Oscar from Buddy TV, Kevin from TVSquad, and Eric from IGN had joined us. We were all ready to go, all but one!
Not long after, everyone except my friend Rae had arrived. Seriously, an hour after her flight had landed there was no sign of our tvwhore. I went through this whole routine… she hasn’t called so maybe she lost her cell phone. She’s been detained by Canadian Mountees and can’t escape. Customs rejected her arrival and she’s been sent back. I watched tv monitors to see if someone from Florida had a bomb on a plane, these kind of things run through my head. I don’t know what to tell you. I can’t imagine why she was detained so long, I mean look at her shirt!
As we were waiting outside, a car pulled up carrying none other than Jensen Ackles himself. He jumped out and ran into the building. A quick glimpse of one of our boys!
Moments later, we entered the blank two toned blue building which houses the production offices, warehouses, and sound stages and we were introduced to Cyrus Yavneh (Line Producer). Cyrus’ office is full of digital print outs of test shots, make up tests, production designs, etc. It’s a cool office because everywhere you look there are fangs, clowns, bloody wounds, etc… the fun stuff.
As they are in their last week of production on Season 2, everyone is cleaning house and that only meant good things for me! Cyrus gave me a ton of shots. I got the extra fang test shots from the vampire episode. Some clown drawings/tests and some other gory things! Loved me some Cyrus. He was very entertaining and acted as our tour guide through the production office.
We went through the art department where they design the look and the ghouls for the show. It’s cool because the hallways are lined with all the funky retro motel walls that are signature to the show’s aesthetic. The walls are covered with print outs of designs, sketches, and inspirations for shots. One whole room was covered in the huge carnival banners used earlier this season.
There were plenty of test shots and inspiration shots on the walls for the season finale (I can’t post those pics though, sorry folks)! We were told that the art department publishes a book of all their work each season through blurb.com but I’ve not been able to find it on there. Might be private. I’ll let you guys know if its something us fans can access.
My favorites have to be the original artworks and the one with plastic dolls! Genius, Andie (thanks for contacting me! you rock girl) does a different Ken doll interpretation of Jensen and Jared each week and posts them online at Plastic Winchester Theater anteka.livejournal.com. These are a huge production favorite. I was told that they get the biggest kick out of the dolls and love that its something online that is updated regularly!
Someone sent a shoebox full of 1000 cranes in support of keeping Supernatural on the air! You can see them all below.
We met up with Lou Bollo who is the Stunt Coordinator on Supernatural and he told us some great stories. A lot of it was stuff we already knew, that the boys are really athletic and competetive, they like to do their own stunts, and that hours and hours of preparations go into even the smallest stunt to ensure safety. He sat us all down and was just really down to earth. Willing to answer anything we threw his way and willing to open up about any and everything stunt wise on the show.
We eventually wandered onto a soundstage where the prop department were busy putting the finishing touches on a large number of tombstones!
*SPOILER ALERT*
A cemetary plays heavily into the finale of Season 2. I can’t go into details but hot diggity, it’s a doesy!
There are just a couple soundstages full of props in development, in production, or in waiting and/or storage. We saw their Motel set which changes episode to episode. As mentioned earlier, there are a ton of signature Motel walls throughout the offices and the set was no exception. A cool mid-70’s tangerine motif was rocking the set this week with some great orange glass decorations. They must have so much fun designing these Motels. Seriously!
So where did we leave off? I’d threatened to kill Rae, I’d confessed to sending nudes of myself to Jensen and Jared, we learned that Teamsters will always beat someone from T.O. any day, and we learned that 1000 paper cranes conveniently fit into a shoebox - who knew?
Can I just tell you that these sound stages are huge folks. There were probably a hundred or so tombstones scattered throughout one of them and that only took up a smidgen of the space; For kicks an Impala or two floating around the bushes or behind a graveyard for safe keeping can easily fit with a whole house, a doll house, and some heavy machinery without a problem.
See there are numerous Impalas, all used for different functions. Some have roofs that are easily removed, or doors, trunks, etc. that can come off depending on what is needed for any given shot in any given episode. It’s creepy how many Impala’s there were. I had flashes of Christine.
We were lucky enough to play around with the cars for a while. We got to see them light the picture in the middle, the long shot of the car. They were going to be filming in the car later in the day. After getting clearance from some folks, we were given the green light to get into the car! Oh yeah baby, my ass would be sitting right where Dean’s ass sits. It’s intimacy by proxy and leather. That’s hot!
That was me doing my best badass. I realize I may have possibly only intimidated Rainbow Brite but what can ya do?
Speaking of Rainbow Brite and dolls… see, nice transition right? Remember those creepy ass dolls that were lurking around in the haunting hotel episode, Playthings, starring Maia from The 4400?
Yeah, while the dolls were nowhere to be found, that damn doll house was working the sound stage in full effect. For reals, it’s the size of a house built for Charla from The Amazing Race. In other words, its friggin’ huge. The coolest part is that the sides of the house swing on hinges and there are movable parts inside. It’s legit. Too legit to quit (oh yes I did) apparently because they still have it kickin’ around!
Right next to the doll house was what many of you would consider a spoiler. I’ll post that picture in a separate post as to not set some of you out on a witch hunt for my gay ass. Trust me, it’s a must see!
Also a must see? The ROADHOUSE! Oh yes kids, the Roadhouse set was up and ready for us to storm. It’s about the size of a large livingroom. It has three walls, a bar in the center, a couple doors, a videogame, a jukebox, some lame ass cassette tapes behind the bar (Ellen really needs to listen to something other than Boys II Men, Sade, Meatloaf and Starship), an animal head on the wall, and some nasty jars of pickled eggs. It looks nothing like you would expect it to, especially without some killer lighting, Ash, his mullet and without Jo sassin’ the joint.
We did our best to bring it back to life though!
The roadhouse has been a great addition to the show this season as have the characters of Ellen, Ash, and Jo. I really have enjoyed Alona Tal since the VM days, and I’ve always been a fan of Samantha Ferris. I mean, she’s the hardest working woman in Vancouver. She makes her way from Supernatural to Battlestar Galactica and then over to The 4400! Ferris is on busy gal. A gal who can eat too. I witnessed with my own eyes her downing 3 wraps. No lie. She kicks ass and I’m not saying a bad word about the woman.
She was on set filming Season 2 DVD Extras while we roamed around. It was a great surprise to see her. Some of the others didn’t even recognize her until I pointed her out. She’s a professional and a chameleon. Who knew?
After exiting the Roadhouse, we ran across a random house set. Last year on the Veronica Mars set I found the Mars kitchen sink to be an absolute junk pit. It had real dirty dishes and food in it. Kinda sick. I took a picture with it so I thought that I’d bring my enthusiasm for sinks to Supernatural as well. Too bad I only found 1 actual basin.
Okay, so obviously there were two houses here. One was a very kitschy retro style kitchen that may or may not be for a flashback. The wallpaper in that first kitchen was unbelievably amazing! The coolest retro design, I fell in love with it.
The second house itself had some really nice features. Features that if I was in the market would be appealing. Some incredible square footage, high ceilings, large windows, a great staircase, some wonderful built-ins in the livingroom allowing for wonderful reading by the fireplace. All in all, a buyers dream. Too bad in the context of the show its probably a frakkin’ nightmare. Just my luck.
We did however find time as a group to do our best Brady Bunch impersonation and cheesed it up for the camera. Why was it that all I could picture in my head was one of those hideous American Idol commercials? From top to bottom we are: Oscar, Ducky, Kevin, Eric, Marjorie, Daniel, and Rae. Don’t we make your teeth hurt? So damn sweet!
Now while we’re on the topic of houses… The mother of all houses was still assembled and still had one major piece of artwork within it. The Winchesters have a friend, a good friend of their father’s… his name is Bobby.
Remember how Bobby’s house acted as the exorcism point for that devious little wench (that I loved) Meg? Guess what? The pentagram is still on the ceiling and I pulled up a chair and did my best Meg impersonation.
No those aren’t spirits floating around the room, they’re spots on my damn lens. What can ya do? If you want to believe their the spirits of all those that Y.E.D. have killed, go right ahead. I love that picture!
Can we talk Meg for a second? While we were talking to Exec. Producer and Director of “All Hell Breaks Loose: Part 2″ Kim Manners, he got on the topic of Meg. He said that he thought it was a mistake for Kripke to kill her when he did. He really enjoyed Meg and thought there was so much you could do with her character.
He likened her to a female version of The Cigarette Smoking Man from The X-Files (which he Co-Exec Produced and Directed for years) - a good villain we love to hate. I completely agree with him. I found Meg to be a great counterpart to the Winchesters. She was a smartass, sometimes vulnerable, but a complete bastard and ruthless most of the time. She knew how to get under their skin and how to play the Daddy card. Meg ruled and I’m still sad to see her gone. Looks like Kim did is as well.
We took a break from the action of the props department and the sound stages that weren’t being used for filming to head on over to meet Diane Widas (Costume Designer) and to see some of the outfits being used in the finale. Not only for the finale, we saw miles and miles of clothes from the first two seasons of the show. It’s quite overwhelming actually.
I saw Sam’s clothes for the finale first so I had to snag a couple pics. The first is a close up of his wardrobe call sheet. The second is of the undershirts.
Here are some shots of Diane’s wardrobe room and her telling us about various stylings for the boys. Color schemes for each, the mood set by the clothes and the amount of time and energy that’s put into each alias and character the boys portray on any given day. Check out the scary clown sketches for “Everybody Loves a Clown” - jeepers creepers! I love seeing all of their badges.
Sometime later we headed on out to the Hair and Makeup trailer and the fabulous Shannon Coppin! Shannon’s featured in the Season 1 DVD extras and she’s not only as gorgeous as she is in the video, she’s also incredibly fun to talk to. Shannon’s a native Western Canadian, from a town right near Vancouver and she loves her some J&J. She used to work on Smallville and loved the show but you can tell her heart lies with the Supernatural gang!
She’s got a kick ass job, a killer bod and a serious love for flesh wounds. She told us all about her average day and how when there are really big bloody scenes a whole make up unit is set up near the set. She usually does their daily makeup and any smaller scratches, flesh wounds, and minor injuries they get on a weekly basis. Sometimes they have to call in a whole team depending on the shots but in general she’s the go to gal!
Her trailer is full of candid shots of the boys and the slew of guest stars they’ve had over the past 2 seasons. Some shots are really cute and funny, some are really gory showing some great wounds! It’s a really cool sight to see, too bad we couldn’t share those memories with you all. Some things need to remain private and this is one of those things. Trust me though when I tell you that there are some hardcore squee worthy shots on those walls. Damn my un-sticky fingers and my desire to be invited back, otherwise I would have taken some of them home for my scrapbook. And no, I don’t scrapbook… I’m not that gay!
While I don’t mind spoilers but I don’t want to spoil you guys… I will say that I was thrown for a loop when we saw the shots scheduled for the finale. The list of all the scenes were posted on a mirror in the makeup trailer. We were told ahead of time that it was there so you didn’t have to look at it (Rae) but I did, like a fool, and discovered many things I was not prepared for! All I will say is that the finale is going to be unreal!
Thanks again to Shannon and Jeannie Chow for letting us tear through their trailer. You gals rock!
I know this is a really long read and a long process. I thank you for sticking with me. I’m super slammed with my day job and my festival duties. I was going to push forward and bang out my three favorite parts of the day but I owe it to everyone to do it the best way I can. Tomorrow!
I know that you’ve all been very patient in coming back to read my reports from the SUPERNATURAL set visit. It’s been quite a while and that’s because I’ve had a lot of person stuff going on that hasn’t allowed me time to be online and/or writing. So let’s get right to the final parts of my set visits, shall we?
I think my favorite part of the day had to be when we were able to pop in on the Visual FX guys. It’s truly amazing that these guys create all of the FX in house and that they really only have the same 8 day schedule that production follows.
I knew I would instantly love these FX guys the second I walked into their trailers. The horror films of my childhood filled their walls, Friday The 13th, Dawn of the Dead, and the original Nightmare on Elm Street. The films, along with the original Halloween, that made me a huge horror film (and made me wet my pants in terror through middle school) as a child and probably warped my mind forever. I guess this led me in some ways to cult-like shows and films.
We were treated to the Supernatural Season 2 FX reel which was about a 5 minutes compilation of their favorite effects from this season’s first 10 episodes. I called it their Emmy Reel, some people laughed, but why the hell not? Some of the green screen work they do is incredible and nothing worse than anything else on television. In fact, some of the ghost shots, some gun shot wounds, some explosions (maybe featuring an arm hitting a door jam and splattering against the camera, maybe not!) and then the infamous black smoke are on par with a good amount of movies out there today.
These guys are pros, through and through. We found out that the exterior helicopter/Bank scenes in Nightshifter were 100% CGI. They used a still photograph of the exterior of the bank and then made composite upon composite and after 18 different layering/motion/effects composites came up with what we saw on television - a seamless computer generated shot and you honestly cannot tell has no real elements in it. Incredible work.
The funniest part of the Nightshifter helicopter scene is that in the background, atop one of the buildings is a billboard. A billboard of Sam and Dean. It’s the green promo shot from the fall’s CW launch campaign. Hysterical. If you weren’t looking for it, you’d never see it. I love that a shot of the boys got in and on the air without the audience noticing. At least, I didn’t see anything online saying anyone noticed.
*Fun Sidebar: While Rae and I were roaming around Vancouver over the weekend we found the bank that is used in the Nightshifter episode! We were so damn proud of ourselves because we just walked around all day and found a part of town that looked the oldest - then WHAMMO! There it was! We would do so well on the Amazing Race with our abilities.
We spent a good amount of time in the first VFX trailer watching stuff from this season including some of the work from Tricia Helfer’s incredible episode and some shots from Season 1.
Ivan, Grant, and Darcy were so cool to take the time and meet with us. They were psyched to get to share their talents with a captive audience.
We then moved on over to the 2nd trailer and found the gang behind the frame by frame effects. 6 or 7 guys zoned in on the computers and tuned out to everything that’s not on the screen. We got to see them putting together some of the graphics for the finale as well as the step by step process for a demon that’s coming soon. Some of the 3-D graphics were unreal. How the frak do these guys learn to do what they do? Its so beyond my mental capacity but it was great to witness first hand.
And the servers and CPUs needed to run and render the effects. I’ve worked on Final Cut Pro with no real effects, just rendering shots and transitions which can take forever so the amount of graphics used for just a 10 second shot on SUPERNATURAL takes a ton and believe me when I tell you, they have the power to make it happen in the fastest amount of time possible.
Visual FX are cool!
We eventually made our way into the sound stage where the actual shooting was taking place. Here’s what I will tell you before going forward…
The sound stage used for shooting is a dark and foggy place. It’s like being in the worst fog you’ve ever seen and realizing after a few minutes that your pictures just aren’t going to be amazing because of all this damn fog! That was a clever way of warning you that the pictures from this portion of the day are full of eerie moody fog.
This was really our first chance to eat all day. We hit craft service like a soccer team sick of eating their own and finding a craft services table in the middle of the Andes.
This is where we encountered Samantha Ferris reenacting the Nathans eating challenge. I’ll say it again, girl can eat!
Exec. Producer and Director of the finale (part 2) Kim Manners came on over and was nice enough to chat with us. We found out that he never wanted to kill Meg, that he finds Supernatural to be a sort of extension of shows like The X-Files. He was great and seriously answered our questions for a good 20 minutes while they did the next set up on set.
I asked how the directors were chosen for each episode and how he ended up with Part 2 of the finale but not Part 1. He basically said that the episodes are assigned by Kripke and there is always discussion as to which person is best for each episode. Sometimes though, he admitted that he directed episodes that had weak stories so his job was much harder; that even though the plot may have been lacking, the audience was captivated either by the actors stepping up their game or by the direction.
He said the obvious, that the boys were seasoned professionals, goofballs, friends, athletes, and ultimately, pains in the ass!
Manners also let us know that the final three episodes were in great hands. Episode 20 “What Is and What Should” is directed by creator Eric Kripke. “All Hell Breaks Loose (Part 1)” is directed by Producer Robert Singer and as we know, Part 2 is under Kim Manners’ direction. It sounds like the last couple episodes are going to be out of control! Hell, given the spoilers I got on set, I know its going to be a wild ride to the finale (which airs May 17th).
After talking to Mr. Manners, we got some pics with the actors director’s chairs. Of course, I had to rub my hands on the seat of JPad’s and I may or may not have rubbed my ass on it as well. You never know!
A woman from the props/art department was painting a gun. This is not the famous Colt. Let’s keep an eye out for this gun in the finale though!
Then we headed on over and strolled through the actual set being used in the scene that Jared and Jensen were blocking. I’m not going to spoil anything other than to say it looked dank, full of cobwebs, and had some rickety-ass areas. As we left the set we saw the source of our foggy atmosphere. The overworked and under appreciated FOG MACHINE and fans for distribution.
Almost every scene on Supernatural is shot with Fog Machines, the fog does not show up on screen however. It gives each shot a nice grainy feel while allowing the DP and the lighting crew to create some incredibly interesting and visual lighting tricks. The fog basically allows them to manipulate light in a way that works best for this show. I can only imagine what the scenes where its supposed to look foggy turn out looking like in person. Soup, thick soup.
The group headed over to where all the monitors are and where the Script Supervisor and Director Kim Manners sit and survey the scenes. I’m sure you’ve seen these set-ups before. It’s got a couple monitors, a bunch of directors chairs, a bunch of head-sets and it needs to remain dead silent while filming.
Kim is great to watch, especially the scene we were working on. There are a couple intricate camera moves, zooms, and pans from just this one coverage angle. In this case, it has Sam as the main focus as he sits at a table. The angle is from behind Dean’s right shoulder. Eventually the focus shifts from Sam to Dean as Dean moves around the room, ending with the two boys standing next to each other in a two-shot.
With every move, pan, or zoom he would move his hands around in front of him, above him, etc. depending on what was supposed to happen camera-wise during the scene. It was similar to watching an Orchestra Conductor and you could tell he had a very specific vision and flow of motion for the scene. Amazing to watch first hand!
Now to give you a proximity report… The boys were honestly about 15 feet from us, behind a set wall. We could hear them faintly while they continued blocking the scene and running their lines but damnit we had yet to see them in character!
Showtime!
Kim Manners took his seat in front of Monitor A which had the live on-air camera. First take, the scenes playing out as it should, the camera catches Jensen as he turns and he has the goofiest, most over the top melodrama look on his face (he might as well have been biting on his fist and placing the back of his hand to his forehead, overwhelmed and overcome; it was that over the top) and the scene plays out in the most ridiculous of acting fashion. It ended with Jensen grabbing hold of Jared’s face, smooshing it around like silly putty and again, the place was in stitches. Jensen had the whole place rolling! Hysterical.
The next couple takes were more serious but these boys are not ones for playing it straight (god don’t I wish). They seem to really have a blast on the set and I guess if you’re there for 18 hours a day, this is the best way to pass the time.
Production handed out headsets so we could hear what the boys were saying while mic’d. It was very fun to watch them go from complete goofs to Sam and Dean in the matter of seconds.
All in all, I’d say we watched them film for a good hour plus before they decided to switch angles and the boys had a few minutes to chat.
First, Holly brought Jensen over to talk with us. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, he is not a small man. He’s probably 6′ to 6′ 1″ which in the world is not small. Standing next to Jared though, he’s Ryan Seacrest.
Jensen had water bottle in hand as he made his way over and introduced himself. This could be all in my head but he shook my hand for a little bit longer than one normally would. We made eye contact, and that was it kids… I quickly became a Dean Man. Shocking I know, but there was something in that handshake, the gaze, and in the way he said my name that just sent me overboard.
To be completely honest, it was like a whirlwind when he started talking. We asked questions, I stuttered over my question and he made fun of me. We’re good like that.
I asked him if the boys felt that they had more creative input this season given how secluded they are and how much of a family the set has become. Too bad I said creatively with many more letters (seriously it came out like this moment from DwTS) than are necessary or even there. It may or may not have come out as CREATITITELY. Yeah, he mocked me. It was hot.
Jared came swinging on through about 5 minutes in and after picking myself up off the floor we all just asked questions and they talked. They made fun of each other, talked about bonding over being from Texas and how they feel like brothers, etc. It’s cute their relationship. They honestly come across as people that care about their show, their crew, their supporting cast, and every fan out there.
Hell, earlier that day they had spent some time with a group from Australia who won a contest to come to the set in honor of Supernatural premiering down under. By the time they got to us they were behind in their shooting schedule and it as almost lunch time (at 7pm).
We didn’t get pictures with the boys (though we got some of the boys), we didn’t get to make out, there was no number swapping and we got them in trouble with the boss! The next scene was already prepped and everyone was waiting but they wanted to chat. Who are we to tell a Winchester to shut up?
Jensen and Jared love what they are doing and they love that we (the fans) are so invested in the characters they work on all day, all year.
Sorry we didn’t have time to ask all the questions you all submitted, we tried to keep it as conversational as possible but I’m not gonna lie… there were a good number of digital recorders shoved in their faces and a good number of flashbulbs going off yet they didn’t act as if they had to be “on.” They were just chill and that was great to see.
After leaving the boys to finish up their coverage before lunch, we headed on out and sampled the delicacy prepared. I had some killer black bean veggie meatballs, some brocollini, and salad. They had veggie meatballs! Love this set.
Rae and I were the only ones interested in heading on over to the wardrobe trailer after dinner and before heading out. There were no earth shattering revelations, nor were there any huge spoilers but the two women running the trailer (sorry I can’t remember their names) were incredibly entertaining and grateful for all of the fans.
It really is great to see that every single person we encountered was invested 100% in the success and community created by their show.
Before making our way back to R.G. and the van we walked through a cemetery set that smelled like shit. Literally, it was full of manure to keep the trees and the grass live while they film. Interesting! Some of the tombstones we saw them painting earlier in the day were all the sudden part of this set. Pretty cool to see the final stages of this set.
Thanks to everyone that made this day possible! It was unbelievable and I’m very grateful for their time. Holly, Winson, JAcks, JPad, and everyone else on set in Vancouver - thank you for your letting some fans in on the action!
You guys rock for sticking with me and reading all of these reports. I’m glad you found them enjoyable.
Remember, the final airs in 2 parts with the portion we saw being filmed airing May 17th! Here’s to a third season of some demon ass kicking!

Awesome write-up! Do you, by any stretch, have a way to find out who works on the cars for the show (tech-wise)? My husband is a tech. He and I are into custom cars and we’d love to know what they’ve done to build out John’s GMC and the boy’s Impala(s). We’d be grateful for any info! Cheers
